First Subsea has developed a diverless connector for large diameter flexible rubber hoses used in the uptake of seawater for FPSO vessel cooling systems and water injection modules. The connector allows water hoses to be pulled and fixed into position without the need for diver intervention. And, should the need arise, the connector can be readily disconnected.

FPSO vessels for crude oil processing and LNG liquefaction rely on drawing water to the topsides for cooling and to feed the water injection module.
The First Subsea diverless connector works on the simple principle of a ball engaged in a taper. The male connector is inserted within a female receptacle – it is self-energising and self-aligning. As the male connector's balls roll up the receptacle's wall, tapers drive the balls outwards and the tightness of the grip increases in direct proportion to the load applied.

The female part of the hose connector is pre-installed on the FPSO enabling the male connector with its flexible hose to be pulled in once the FPSO is in position.
“We have designed the water hose connector to provide companies with a flexible and safe solution to installing water hoses, using our proven Ballgrab connector technology for an easy-to-install and secure fit,” said Brian Green, general manager, First Subsea Ltd.
